Rooted

With his caring fingers reaching out to mine
he’s made his touch known to my fingertips.
My eyes closed I recall -over the wine and dine-
how it felt to then finally kiss his cautious lips.

Sharing food, thoughts, showers and the bed,
with him, it has been special in every good way.
Never has time that I spent kept stronger its play
in memories than the intimate days we’ve had.

Rooted like ancient iron wood he’s in my heart,
a strong nested closeness that forever stays felt.
As long as I live, he will always be there.

Even as life’s unruly curling keeps us apart,
those rare precious moments will be vividly held.
He’s with me now and everywhere.

Ludy Bührs

The topics she writes about are very diverse, so are the poetry styles she applies. As a Dutch translator and poet, having lived in Cambodia's capital city Phnom Penh for 2.5 years, in 2008 she published "Op de ruïnes van een rijk" (On the Ruins of an Empire) ISBN 978-90-8834-483-1 with 60 poems based on her experiences there. In 2007 she received a Certificate of Accomplishment as one of The Best Poems and Poets of 2007 issued by poetry.com and the International Library of Poetry for her poem Choked Truth, her own translation of "Verstikte waarheid", one of the poems in the book. Born in 1956, she still works as an independent translator, translating from English into Dutch. more…

Thanks, Ludy. Her husband, whom she met as a nurse in Scotland, was a Swiss neurosurgeon with his medical practice in Butte, Montana, where he is memorialized.

Rooted is a beautifully introspective poem that captures the essence of a love that remains grounded in the speaker’s heart. Using natural metaphors and rich sensory imagery, the poem speaks to the power of memory and love that stays vivid and tangible despite the passing of time or distance. The simplicity and depth of Rooted create a lasting impression of connection and resilience.

“Rooted” is a beautifully crafted poem that successfully conveys the complexities of love, intimacy, and memory. Its strength lies in the effective use of imagery, emotional resonance, and relatable themes. Bührs captures the essence of a deep connection while acknowledging the challenges that can arise in relationships. The poem’s musicality and warmth make it an engaging and heartfelt read.

In summary, this piece eloquently illustrates the idea that love, while rooted in shared experiences, remains a profound and abiding presence in one’s life, regardless of physical separation.

This poem aptly captures the sentiments of a sister of mine who lost her beloved husband to illness and now memorializes the memories she shared with him.
