Okay, let's talk.
About sunflowers and sadness
and love that leads to madness.
Children’s laughter and fears,
grown-up joys and shared tears.
Because at the very least we
all go through those years.
Let’s talk.
About the differences we lack
whether white, or brown, or black.
The stories we tell between here and gone,
alive and dead, between dusk and dawn.
Write them down in this book I have
and we’ll tell them until we yawn.
Let’s talk.
While we watch the sun fade
throwing the world into evening shade.
And not the kind that humans throw
when they speak on things they do not know.
It’s time to talk about all the things we need
to lift us up, to help us grow.
Please, can we talk?
Look around and take note of the pain
that we inflict on others without any gain.
Watch for the aching, the hearts unsteady,
the backs that are breaking, waiting and ready
for the change the best of us have begged for,
died and fought for, breath ragged and thready.
Can we talk?
About how we can enter into a state of peace
without seeking to tear up another man’s lease
on life, on love, the things we all want deep down
we can have them without watching each other drown.
Look to yourself, into the depths of your lonely soul,
then stand tall in that mirror, straighten your crown.
Let’s talk.
About how we can bring joy to each other.
Reach out a hand to your sister and brother.
The hand reaching back will help spread that light
and turn this shady world into something bright.
Then we can lay down the swords, the guns, the wars
and put to rest these days of turmoil and eternal fight.
Okay? Let’s talk.
Let’s just talk.
