I Can't

Adriane Jones 1986 (Oklahoma)

I can't fight this anymore, I can't make it go away.
I can't put out this fire within me, but I don't want it to stay.
I can't block these memories and I can't cure the pain. I can't pretend they're not there like an unwanted chain.
I can't bury these feelings like treasure. If I could it wouldn't be for my own pleasure.
I can't pretend everything is fine. I can't let you be the one who shines.
I can't toss all of this up in the air, I refuse to let it all just disappear.
This is so confusing, why does someone always have to be losing?
I don't know how to work this out, because it's love I'm talking about.

About this poem

I originally wrote this in '02 about my HS sweetheart whom couldn't seem to get his act together and figure out if he saw the same future with me as I saw with him. If only we had known he would be killed by an I.ED 9 years later while he was "trying to be the man I deserved".
