We're trying

Maybe there is no importance to living;
simply the matter of being
awake, alive, alight with fire
burning with a passion for
the unknown is reason enough to exist.

The unknown calls out to you, me, us.
Do we answer it blindly?
Or do we let it keep calling,
hoping our ears will stop ringing one day,
leave us alone,
we’re trying to survive here,
we’re trying to stop feeling like
we want to die here?!

About this poem

I wrote this poem sometime during the great quarantine era back when everyone in America stayed inside while we slowly learned more about Covid-19. I was feeling very depressed, as was most of the world I'd assume, so I tried using poetry as a way to express myself in a healthier way than just sleeping all day long.

Kimberly Santiago

I grew up in a white suburban neighborhood in DE. I spent much of my childhood playing tennis with my family and going on walks around the park. Today I live by myself in a more urban part of town. I enjoy reading/writing poetry whenever I can, and I also enjoy writing short stories. I hope to become a published author in the near future. more…
