The 'S' Word (Suicide)

Charles Gerringer 1941 (Allegany, NY)

The ‘S’ Word (Suicide)

We cannot say the ‘S’ word.
It is too hard to bear.
Why can’t there be another word
that doesn’t our hearts tear.

Soon we must surrender
And say that awful word.
The word that rends our world apart
And makes the voiceless heard.

To most it is a sign
Of failure and defeat.
That act so horrendous- -
The word we can’t repeat.

But we’ll go on, day by day
Yet struggle with the fact,
That one we loved so long and dear
Carried out the unsaid act.
