Always I carry this rock

In my pocket, in my thoughts

I know each band

Stacking over time

Old bands the same

New bands presumed

Yellows then browns

Each time we meet

In our spring

Cherished warmth

We set down our rocks, akin

Minerals washing over them

Growing them in purity

Thickening white bands

I knew my rock

Carried the heaviness of it

Curiously changing

Brilliant ivory edge

Troughs crumbling dark bands

Lighter in my hand
