Empty Life

You told me you were filled with pity

but your words cut like a knife

You strove to fill the empty corners

Of my empty life.

You filled me full of all your gifts

until no space remained;

My life was filled to bursting point

with your dreams and pain.

I longed for the emptiness you saw

and I yearned to forget

they were your dreams and thoughts

that filled me with regret

In search of the life that you had seen

as an empty glass

My breath caught at the glimpse of it

inside your looking glass.
