Born in Kabul Afghanistan, Dr. G. Rauf Roashan is an American with a rich background in medicine, journalism, education, writing of prose and poetry primarily in Dari and Pashto and a political commentator primarily in English. Before the communist regime that was installed by the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, Dr. Roashan worked with the Afghan government in high ranking positions and also served as his country's delegate to major world and regional conferences on health especially the World Health Assemblies and regional meetings. After acquiring his MD degree from Kabul University, he obtained a master's degree from Yale University in the United States. He has served on international committees in the World Health Organization's Eastern Mediterranian Region as well as the WHO South East Asian Region. He has been recognized for his services to the region by the WHO that bestowed the Dr. A. T. Shousha Foundation's medal on him in Geneva, Switzerland. Here in the United States he has held teaching positions and has written profusely on Afghan politics. He has written poems in Dari and Pashto as well. A selection of his Dari poems has been published in Fremont, California. Now in his senior years he has devoted most of his time to writing of poetry, delivering of speeches on culture and interpretations of Sufism.
