Delilah's Tear

We talked about death, her grandma and I,
The four of us sitting on the couch,
And knowing when it's time

Delilah looked at him
Sitting peacefully, looking away
Not joining in the conversation

Being quiet is ok
Especially when its family
Sometimes not everyone joins in

She held back emotions
Tried to with all her might
When a tear blossomed to glide down her cheek

She stared up into the air
Avoiding her surroundings
Eyes glistening, emotions swelling

“But, but...,” she protested,
“Look at him.
He's right here!”

Ellwood sat on my lap
Content
Purring.

Something is going on here, but I do not know exactly what it is. Who is the person in question for whom that tear appeared. Who is going to die so to speak. Him? The poem pictures a serious scene.

It;s meant to be enigmatic until you decide who "him" is

Not meant to rhyme. I think I was done with rhyme 50 years ago.

Nice poem. Brief, reads well, ends clean. I think you could lose all the punctuation. It would scan better, unless you meant it for emphasis.

I go back and forth on punctuation, especially periods, but I feel I need the quotation marks.
