The Unsent

Faridah Bakari 1999 (Abuja)

I took it back
Like so many words I wanted to say
But I swallow my honesty for the first time in my life
I have no inkling what led to it
Or atleast if the reason I suspect is accurate then it's best I not say a thing
What I am now is nothing compared to the fear I'll feel the day you realize
I don't know how I'll live then
Look you in the eye; you knowing all that
I say them when I'm in my own company
When you're far from I am
Don't remind me
I know exactly what I am
So I save you from that
I took those words and I have more
And if I ever spill it, I'll take it all back
You deserve so much better than that
And I'm a coward who refuses to be vulnerable
Yes I have been that
And yet the coward places her fingers on the keyboard
Promising not to cry
Swearing to be brave
Working up the courage to say
That the heart must be protected at all cost
And that heart, that is worth that, is all yours

About this poem

This poem is a love letter unsent for fear of rejection or reprisal. A love I almost had in my grasp but let go of.
