The Road

Ruth Cheney 2010 (Olympia, Washington)

One dry lonely road
Only sorrow does it bode
Only friend would be the bones
Countless, countless, countless stones

No well to fill the hollow soul
No food to fill my bowl
Sorrow lurks within my heart
Slowly, slowly, slowly tearing me apart

Falling to my knees
The Road Master ignores my pleas
No moisture left for tears
Sadness, sadness, sadness only hears

Choking on my own tongue
I wish my neck would be wrung
But no one will give me that luxury
I plead, plead, plead for mercy
