The Reason Why

“Why do you love this here woman or man?”
Frequently answered in wonderful ways,
Calling the mind back to blest, cherished days,
When that most tender fondness first began:

Blissful laughs shared, comfort brought when tears ran;
Grand gestures and words that touch and amaze;
Fluttering inside when meeting their gaze,
Making the heart race as fast as it can.

Such great joys tend to draw two souls nearer,
As sweet affection grows ever dearer;
Though if they vanished, would that flame be less?
After all, love’s often a bloody mess.
It seems, then, that to show devotion true,
Is to simply say: “Because I choose to.”
