Waning

Strutting cocky, sure and rocky,
Song upon the tongue.
Hands in pocket, head in rocket,
Not easily outdone.

Legs grow tired, thickening mire,
A false note in the air.
Eyes grow weary, road turns dreary,
Confidence still there.

One leg short, painfully walk,
The song becomes a hum.
Spectacles born, a coat to warm,
Faint, the sound of the drum.

Both legs lame, stricken with pain,
The hum becomes a groan.
Heart in pieces, sorrow increases,
Suffering all alone.

Legs both dumb, completely numb,
Silence the only sound left.
Sparkle of light, fantasy flight,
Life the victim of theft.
