HUNT AND PECK
Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)
Hunting avian creatures
Tall as Sindbad’s mighty roc,
Wing across night oceans
Just e’er it’s twelve o’clock.
Giant feathered beasts flap
Silently through the sky,
Soaring far above passers
Unaware they’re about to die.
Feasting upon man or beast
Winged terror stalks the dark,
Flying silently through the night
Till seeing movement in a park:
Far below young lovers
Cuddling on an old wooden bench,
Find themselves startled by
A foul, unearthly stench:
The stench of avian death
Swooping down from far above,
To slaughter and feast upon
A couple beset by love.
Theatre-goers late at night
Set out into darkened streets,
Walking down dark alleyways
Unaware of what they might meet:
Winging silent overhead
The elephant bird peering down,
Spies unsuspecting couples
Out for a good night on the town:
But their good night soon turns bad
As the horrid creature overhead,
Swoops down as suddenly as death
Determined it’s time to be fed!
Winging high above the town
A monster from olden times,
Terrorising all the creatures
Within its latest climes.
