Crying Child

Why am I a child
With only one of my parents?
Growing up missing the other
As my own fault – errant.

Why could not both parents
Be the norm for me;
To love and be happy
Together all three?

Why must I have to keep on
Missing the one without end,
Wondering whether the wrong
Will ever start to mend.

Why do they want
The birth of a child like me?
Then for the sake
Of their own happiness
Leave sad as me.

They are so selfish,
Fulfilling their own gains
Robbing my smiles and security
For their childish games.

Why must I feel guilty;
For the resulting and living pain?
Shouldering the hurt of the parent,
Left alone,
Under unending strain.

Why should I have
To be born of them
Just to miss;
The love of a cruel parent,
His scent and his kiss?

Why could not births
Like mine be prevented;
To be left unwanted
By the one,
Who had separated.

Why must I be subjected.
To the full force of their wars,
Being used as a weapon,
A bargaining clause?

Why is my sad life blamed.
For their every misery?
If it were not for me,
The trapped parent would be free.

Why do I have to hide in daydreams,
Creating happiness in my mind.
Seeking to picture in thoughts
The love I cannot find.

Why should I have to rush out
Of my precious childhood;
To find peace from my pains
And out of badly extracted good.

Why do not more children
Like me arrive stillborn;
Thereby avoiding suffering
And loyalties to be torn?

Why am I a part of society
Which is so uncivilised;
Where even our own children
Are selfishly sacrificed?

About this poem

Giving birth to a child in present-day society and then running away from parental responsibilities is one of the worst sins in all religions. Robbing the innocent the peace of mind for the rest of life, cannot be a punishment for the child’s bad karma. If it is, how Godhead could be so cruel to the innocent child?
