The Knight

The old building still stands the way it was when you were here
That old yellow light shines down to remind me of those days
The air is still filled with the sweet smell of dirt and it makes my memory clear
Though the reflections of friends faces show that time has it’s ways
You’re there in that place in the distance with my youth and your life
We have all lived in so many ways and now nearly the time of your age
I’ll never know the reasons you quit trying or felt you couldn’t bear the strife
But as I face the child that never really knew you I’ll turn another page
It’s there in his face I will see you again and feel my heart break
In his mind he will see me as strange, as unfamiliar as you
I’ll tell him your story, tho short, I’ll give him something to take
For my own son died there in that time, in that place, in that life too
I resurrect you for him and I dub thee a Knight not only in name but in his memory of  you

About this poem

When I was a 20 year old man I worked with a man who had the last name knight. We were friends. I moved across the country and some years later he committed suicide. 16 years later I returned to the place where we knew each other and ran into old friends. It got me thinking about him.
