Trees

From the first day I saw you I knew I’d found love
So small you’d fit in my hands
You made me feel larger than life and insignificant at that same moment
Your eyes so blue and skin so soft with little hands that win your heart
But years later I see the trees
I see them for what they are
The trees will see you grow old and live in your sky
They’ll see you off to college and shade you on sunny days when you’re old
They will listen to your children as they laugh
They will see you crying when I die and leave you to hurt alone
But the trees they won’t hug you and make it go away
They will stand there as you go through it and then watch you as you leave this world
I’m jealous of those trees but if I were a tree I’d never have the mortal minutes I spend with you
So I see trees and I miss you, I miss who you will become

About this poem

My son inspires me every day and the bond we share is unlike anything I’ve ever had.
