The First and The Last

Noeline Rowe 1955 (Portlaoise)

The First And The Last

For nine months she carried us
Around in her tummy
After that she gave birth
And became our very best Mummy

As we opened our eyes each morning
She was the first person we saw
Before we closed them each night
She was the last person we saw

She was the last one we saw
Before off to school we did go
And the first one we saw
When we came home you know

She was there to pick us up
When on the ground we did fall
She was there every moment
When we were very small

She was there in our sickness
She was there in our health
When we have our mother
We are blest with great wealth

For those who still have theirs
Oh how lucky are they
For I wish I had mine back
And not just for today

So take care of that lady
Whom you call your Mother
You can have only one
And there will never be another
