Treachery

Raj Chowdhury 1984 (Kolkata)

All alone, in the dark,
The split moves apart,
When they sink through the ground,
With endlessness to surround,
When they look up to see
And stagger to make their stand,
Grasping for breath,
It is too late to understand,
In vain they reach out for a warm hand,

Hoping for the new day to dawn,
And for them to stand along,
They had given their all,
Nourishing them with their blood,
It was only a paradox they had served,
If only they could see the end,
Through the haze of what had been feigned,
It was only death, that is imminent,
All alone in the dark.
