The Empty Chair

The Empty Chair

Against the farmhouse blasts the cold,
Frightful, icy, wintry cold;
While the family lifts a prayer,
                A prayer around the empty chair,
A prayer for one not seated there,
Not seated in the empty chair.

The family sits around a meal,
Round a festive, fragrant meal;
While I cast a tearful stare
                And see the lonely empty chair
Of one no longer seated there,
Not seated in the empty chair.

My heart is saddened by the sight,
The dreadful, awful, ghastly sight,
That scatters sadness through the air
                Drifting o’er the empty chair
And shows nobody seated there,
Seated in the empty chair.

Thoughts commingled with the past,
Tangled, knotted, distant past,
Bring to mind the moments there,
                Moments in the empty chair,
When I was happy seated there
Sitting in the empty chair!
