Dipsomania

I wake up at noon, still bleary-eyed
From a night of drinking and smoking
I light a cigarette and sip on coffee
Trying to silence the voices in my head

The bills pile up on my kitchen table
But I can’t seem to give a damn
I’ll find some odd job or write a little something
Just enough to pay the rent, or maybe not

My love life is a mess, but I don’t mind
I’ll take moments of pleasure over commitment
I’ve been hurt too many times before
And my heart has turned into a stone

I walk down the street, past the bums and the hustlers
Feeling like a king in my own misery
I don’t need anyone, I tell myself
But deep inside, I long for some company

Maybe one day I’ll get my shit together
But for now, I’ll just keep on living
In this chaotic world that I call home
With a cigarette in my hand and a bottle by my side.

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
