Wilderness
Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)
In the wilderness,
there is no noise
But the rustling of leaves,
the gentle breeze
The twittering birds
and the buzzing bees
Here, we leave behind the world’s joys
The trees tower above,
touching the sky.
Their branches a sanctuary
for those who seek
Solitude,
calmness,
and peace,
not weak
A place where man and nature can unify
Amidst the thicket,
the creatures roam
The deer,
the fox,
the rabbit, and the hare
A safe haven,
where they no longer fear
Their freedom,
a present,
grander than the home
The sun envelopes everything in light
It paints the landscape anew
with every hour
Mountains,
rivers,
valleys that empower
The withering soul,
giving it new sight
Eagles and hawks soar
in the distant sky
A sight we seldom witness in our city shell
A reminder
that we’re not the only ones who dwell
In this earth,
where we’re just passersby
The wilderness is a reflection of our soul
Its beauty,
its peace,
its harmony,
desire
For us to break
from our busy mire
To make us whole,
to make us whole
Let us walk this path
unknown
To immerse ourselves
in this natural grace.
To find in our lives,
a different pace
To wander in the wilderness,
and call it home.
