Underbelly Of Society
Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)
The city streets are a battleground
With the downtrodden
Fighting for survival
Against the vices of urban life.
The air is thick with the stench of decay,
The sounds of sirens,
And the muffled cries
Of those being crushed
By the weight of society's sins.
It's a place where dreams go to die,
And the weak are preyed upon
By the strong.
The neon lights,
That once promised glamour and success
Now flicker and fade,
Casting shadows on the faces
Of the forgotten and depraved.
The witches' brew of sex and violence
Bubbles
In the underbelly of the city,
Drawing in those who hunger for a taste
Of forbidden fruit.
In the shadows,
Broken bodies lie in twisted heaps,
The victims of a society
That chews up
And spits out
Those who dare to hope
For a better life.
The downtrodden are the fallen,
The forgotten,
The ones crushed
Beneath the weight
Of a system
That's ran by swinging dicks
And charlatans
Who sit on their corporate thrones
And get off
To their superiority complexes.
A system
That values money over humanity.
And yet,
Even in their darkest moments,
They cling to a whisper of hope,
A flicker of light
That refuses
To be extinguished.
There are no easy answers
In this world of corruption and greed.
But change is possible.
If only we had the courage
To fight against the tide.
But it's usually the good people
Who are the most silent.
For the downtrodden of our society,
Every day is a struggle.
But they are warriors,
Survivors,
Battling for a better life
In a world that doesn't value their worth.
And so let us take up their cause
And fight for justice,
for equality,
for a better world
where all are free
to chase their dreams
and live with dignity
and respect.
Let's join together
To rise against the violence
And degradation
That plagues our streets,
And uplift
Those who have been pushed down
And left behind.
Only then,
Will we truly understand
The true nature
Of urban life,
And the challenges
Faced
By the downtrodden
In American society.
