Summoned or not God is Ever Present
Karl Constantine FOLKES 1935 (Portland)
God’s dwelling place is everywhere.
And everywhere is God’s dwelling place.
We cannot escape God.
The architect of our consciousness.
Since for mankind God is omniscient,
our conscience in all its varied forms
must be God’s innermost sanctuary,
and where God is ever present.
The mystery of God is in our consciousness.
Our consciousness is God’s resting place.
Where God rests in His creation.
Declaring it to be ‘Very Good.’
We cannot escape God,
even as we cannot escape
our God-given conscience.
Our conscience is God’s sanctuary.
We are yoked to God in our consciousness.
With Wisdom He declares to us:
“My yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
We are asked to let our conscience be our guide.
In this act of self-examination every one of us
is convicted by our own conscience,
like the Pharisees and Sadducees
of the Gospel of John 8:9.
From His Seat of Judgment
God prepares His bounty of rewards.
Judging the righteous and the unrighteous.
Those choosing ‘The Good’ or ‘The Bad.’
Know therefore ‘The Good’ and ‘The Bad’
by free choice resting in our own hearts.
We, knowing Good, must not choose Evil.
For God is the judge of all His creation.
Our conscience is our own guide.
Our conscience is God’s dwelling place.
For God’s dwelling place is everywhere.
And God dwells in our innermost hearts.
Summoned or not God is present.
Summoned or not God is ever present.
Summoned or not God abides in us.
Summoned or not we are yoked to God.
About this poem
The eminent Swiss physician, psychiatrist and psychotherapist Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961), inspired by the earlier sixteenth century ADAGIA writings of Dutch theologian Desiderius Erasmus, once declared: “Vocatus Atque Non Vocatus Deus Aderit ” (“Summoned or not God is ever present”). Theologians, rabbinical scholars, philosophers, skeptics, thinkers of all disciplines question or even debate the existence, nature, domicile and majesty of God. Ironically, in doing so, they unwittingly are engaged in questioning the nature of their own existence; and their very capacity to rationalize and contemplate their ever changing states of-consciousness as sentient beings, while with hubris calling themselves Homo Sapiens. Known or unknown, acknowledged or denied, we, in body, mind and spirit, are all indelibly stamped in the image and likeness of God, our Lord and Master. more »
