Sucker punch

Watching the red in my eye disappear was like watching a blood moon eclipsing in increments But the blind pain
still rose and set

And the stain that you left
Would remind me it’s sticks and stones
that break bones,
When there’s no words

I carried that shame, for you
though it was never my burden to bare
But I was scarred and scared
The blame settling in my skull

It became a dull ache
The kind of pain I could take
A shadow of the deed
And a skeleton in my closet

It’s starting to get pretty cramped
In there where my sorrows sit
Lamenting in their narratives
And needling with every chance they get

I’m supposed to keep the door shut
And for days, weeks, months I do
But curiosity eventually kills even the cat
And I shove it in there with the skeletons too
