Goodbye my Margaret.

Willie de Vrye 2003 (Durban)

It was an early morning in the icy winter time,
I was up at the first crackle of the clocks chime.
It was hard getting out of bed
I would've rather wanted to sleep a little while longer instead,
But I had to be up to make sure all was ready
And that things were set and steady.

Being the only child from my mother's womb
Always meant that I would stand alone at her tomb
Never thought the day would be near
But now that day I have feared was here
Sitting at my kitchen table
Feeling a little shaken and unstable
Not knowing what emotion to show or tell
Or if I my heart will make it through this hell.

It was 10'o clock
And my head felt like an empty block.
Finally the time came for the choir to start the dark hymn,
and time for the coffin to enter in.
My soul sank down to my feet
And my heart nearly skipped a beat.

Seeing her lying there with her rosy skin and; surprisingly a smile
Made me think for a while
How on earth can she have a face of joy,
while I am standing here crying like a little boy.
I was broken,
and I had so many words that were unspoken.

Then my last tear fell,
like the last ring of the church bell.
A smile with a little grin,
appeared on my chin
Then it hit me like an arrow a target,
this was not goodbye,
but rather see you later my Margaret.
