The Mycelial Sea
Kay Lavelle 1985 (Maryland)
Deep in the wood just past the oak’s crooked roots,
Lies a most magical place with the strangest of fruits.
Where mushrooms stand tall among all the flowers,
And faeries do frolic during the darkest of hours.
You’ll see puffball faeries as round as can be,
Floating upon a soft mycelial sea.
There are chanterelle faeries all golden and bright,
Lighting the forest with their soft glowing light.
Turkey tail faeries so lacy and sprite,
Weave veils in the forest each star-spangled night.
And the coral faeries oh how they dance!
Upon polypore stages they leap and they prance.
If you look very close with eyes shining bright,
Maybe you’ll witness their magic this night
Under the moon, they'll dance and they'll play,
Until the waking light of a brand new day.
So tippy-toe softly through this whimsical place,
Of mushroom and Fae and natures fine grace.
On wings they flit as fungal spores fly free
Living the way we were all meant to be.
About this poem
I've forever been in love with folklore, particularly those regarding the Fae. I've always imagined that they were intertwined with the fungi found in the forest. This poem was written with that in mind.
