Scraps of me

A scrap of your soul fell into my heart, and carved your name within it.
I feel like stale bread and the ends of my hair are dead.
Without you.
I feel like murky water pouring down the drain and like sweaty summer rain.
How am I supposed to start a brand new day,
with the anxieties and smiles and emotions of yesterday lingering within me like dirty bits of food in the sink after washing up.
Floating within me,
Is a golden script of your soul,
The pages of your eyes
And the prose of your smile.

About this poem

A free verse poem I wrote while sitting in English class contemplating the art of understanding another person and the perception of time.
