Sacrifice

RM Slomin 1981 (Chicago)

They asked for my youth  & I gave it with out a thought.
They asked for my beauty & I hoped it could  be bought .
They asked for all my time,  & all my minutes became their own.
They asked for all my money, & every dollar became their home.
They asked for my  attention & I was willing to give it all.
I promised to be the cushion for every single fall.
They asked for all my love leaving nothing for myself.
I haven't much worth loving so it' seemed just as well.
They asked for all my energy, so I'm tired all the time.
They asked for my very spirit, but its theirs already so it's fine.
How ugly I must look & even fat & sad to most,
Having no pride, beauty or thin body left to boast.
But do it all again even knowing how far I fall.
Because hearing them call you mommy is still the greatest gift of all.
