Redshift
Do you think that Slipher or Doppler
Or even old Einstein had a clue about us and where we are headed?
They told us that our world and surrounding planets cling to others in small clusters
Or “cities” of star systems as space expands between our galaxies and others.
That much the old wise guys knew and predicted
And they sought a constant to define and quantify this tragedy.
We all have the same redshift in our lives,
Finding ways to put ourselves in groups and separating ourselves from others.
We allow the differences between “us” and “them” to grow
And grow and grow, until we are alien to each other.
We no longer understand, share or feel compassion for each other
In this expansion of our universe.
And we, too, seek a constant to define and quantify this tragedy,
Something to explain why we cannot connect to each other.
