Summer Play

Andy Lyle 1951 (Londonderry)

I often went a wandering
Through the glens at home
The trees created archways
Through which I loved to roam
Sometimes I'd be a Cowboy
Hiding from my feathered foe
I'd run until my heart raced
And I'd reached the rivers flow
Then I'd cast my shoes off
And go in for a wade
Cowboys often did this
To hide the scent they made
You must be wary of the Indians
Hiding in the long green grass
For a single hit from arrow
And you would breathe your last
But now the sun is setting
So I must end my play
And leave Cowboys and Indians
For another summers day
