The Lies We Tell

They are lying about the darkness
laying there demons down beside us
rubbing security smooth on our backs
like the blanket we keep from that first
visit at the hospital
which can save us till we buy another
while we lay beside
smoothing security
lying about the darkness
casting our demons down
the ones are children become afraid of
afraid to open the closet door
or clean underneath their beds
our insecurities rest there
for the next generation
as we lay there
we lie there
an watch the children cry here
scared of
years of heartache
regret
they haven't experienced yet
like we used to do
they hold the blanket
past their nose
and try not to breath
the whispers we tell
about why they should sleep
with the lies we tell
