Analysis of Dragon lore
Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)
Old legends speak of
Gigantic, winged saurians,
Breathing fiery death.
Old knights tell tales
Of fiery serpents attacking
Passing wayfarers.
Wayfarers speak of
Great, winged snake-like creatures seen
To slaughter brave knights.
Beneath ancients forts
Dragons are said to sleep and wait,
For the call to war.
The call to wage war
Against unsuspecting knights,
Riding on chargers.
Chargers terrified
By flaming-nostrilled beasts that,
Fly above their heads.
And flying to war
Saurians zero in on,
All men riding steeds.
Lances are raised as
Knights do battle with winged beasts,
Fighting for dear life.
Men and steeds both fall
Crisped by dragon breath; killed in
An ageless battle.
Dragons too are killed
Run through by sharp lances, struck down
By valiant knights.
Ancient legends tell
Of battles won, battles lost;
Dragons and men killed.
