Analysis of THE NIGHT CREEPER

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

A dreadful being creeps
Through the dreams of sleeping folk,
Slashing, ripping, rending
Leaving victims rudely broke.

He creeps from dream to dream
To locate the perfect prey,
Someone who doesn’t see in time
And will not waken with the day.

A mindless corpse now sleeping
That’s all he leaves behind,
A working, breathing body
But without a living mind.

Comatose, his victims are
Taken to a hospital ward,
But then the creeper calls again
To sever their astral cord.

Their souls gone from their bodies
They are now the sleeping dead,
Victims of a loathsome creature
That every sleeper dreads.

He cannot hurt the waking
Only people fast asleep,
Through their dreams and nightmares
This malignant creature creeps.

He lives in nightmares and in dreams
And promises left unfulfilled,
He cannot hurt their living flesh
But their minds and souls he kills.

To leave an empty capsule
That was once a living person,
Now it’s just an empty shell
Their soul and being gone.

THE END
