Analysis of THE LAND OF THE DEAD (II)

In the land of the dead
Loathsome horrors do abound,
Creepers, predators, hippogriffs
Soaring above the ground.

Swooping down on travellers
Attacking innocent passersby,
Scratching, clawing, pecking
The guiltless as they die.

Blue Men, Green Men, evil imps
All torment the chaste and good,
Harvesters wielding scythes
Draped in black coats and hoods.

Foul beasts of so many kinds
Dwell within the land of the dead,
All sorts of nameless abominations
Villeins, and knights without heads.

Poltergeists and doppelgangers
Phantoms, werewolfs, manticores,
Tormenting, killing human beings
Or devouring living people raw.

Horrors in burial grounds
Reaching out for the living,
Zombies, ghouls, vampires
All completely unforgiving:

Unforgiving of live people
Who put them underground,
Concreting them in ancient crypts
Within this awful town.

In the land of the dead
No hope is left in sight,
No-one living survives for long
In this land of constant night.
