Analysis of GITCHE MANITOU

The fundamental life force
Living spirit of all things,
Omnipresent it manifests
Itself into all living beings.

Aashaa Monetoo the good spirit
Always opposes Otshee Monetoo,
Who represents the evil spirit
Who controls the bad things we do.

In the beginning Aashaa Monetoo
Gave the land to the Algonquians,
So they could tame the creatures
Who now obey the will of man.

Aashaa Monetoo the good spirit
Provides healing for all of the ill,
And he helps shamans see the future
If that is the great spirits will.

Medicine men and Shamans
Use singing, dancing, and drum beats,
In the hope of entering a state where
Gitchea Manitou, they can meet.

Gitchea Manitou (or Aashaa Monetoo)
Rules all things in this big wide land,
From the highest to the very lowest
All living creatures obey his command

Sometimes Gitche Manitou answers
The needs of the medicine men,
To help them predict coming events
Or when food will be plentiful again.
