Analysis of The Pairing of Good and Evil
Karl Constantine FOLKES 1935 (Portland)
Did not Carl Jung, in his meditation of “The Archetypes and The Collective Unconscious,” once say:
“In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order, in all caprice a fixed law, for everything that works is grounded in its opposite.”
This antinomic moral judgment is, I declare, a search for reason, amidst the illness of its own treason of the consummate consummation of good and evil.
And thus my engagement (pray, not my marriage or, worse yet, my miscarriage!) in this discussion:
A soliloquy of the ego with the psyche—
Good and Evil, Chaos and Cosmos. Can one exist without the other? Which is the Father? Which is the Mother? Or is there some other other? Is there yet some other order?
Evoking, towering, babbling questions, conceived by mind that will not rest, forever in some Faustian quest, oblivious of its own deception!
Forever in a question that turns upon itself —
The Ouroboros search unsettling in its perch.
A serpentine quest that can never be put to rest.
Imagine it, image it, picture it —
The numinous head as Father courting its tail as numinous Mother —
The temperance of the Animus Father provoked by the emotion of the Anima Mother.
A yin-yang interaction leading to putrefaction,
not finding satisfaction, immersed in its solution insolvent of dilution.
The wherewithal is this:
A sea of chaos in the cosmos that we identify as order of creation —
A fermentation of the Firmament —
Light emerging out of darkness…
Good and Evil, Chaos and Cosmos —
Can one exist without the other?

About this poem
The subject of good and evil invokes the question of the role of morality, ethics, religion, philosophy and politics in human behavior. In a twenty first century world of alternative truths and alternative facts, this subject becomes even more pressing in a world where, in most contexts, the concept of “good” continues to denote desirable conduct that stands in strident opposition to the concept of “evil,” considered to be immoral and unethical. Eminent Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Gustav Jung’s meditation on the dark side of human nature in the many volumes of his psychological publications, invites all of us to dare to examine, and to come to terms with, the element of rascality resident within our innermost beings. more »
