Analysis of OUT IN THE EVIL NIGHT

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Out in the evil night where
Savage beasts come out to play,
Stalking any late-night shoppers
Beneath the moon's hateful rays.

Lurking in the wavering shadows
Just outside the local shopping mall,
Watching laden shoppers departing
Loaded down with thick carryalls.

Watching the milling throng leaving
Hoping soon to spy a lone patron,
Travelling all alone upon foot
After the harried crowd has gone.

Eventually the late swarming masses
Slowly begin to taper right out,
Until just lone stragglers are coming
Out of the mall, which is closing down.

Then through the dark concrete jungle
Monstrous entities are following behind,
Anticipating soon making a killing
In the darkness of the sinister night.

Out in the evil night where
Hellish creatures mill around,
Hoping to sup upon the unwary as
After work, they're homeward bound.

Horrid shadows breaking the night
As dreadful carnivores follow you,
As you oh so slowly stroll along
Unaware your life is nearly through.
