Analysis of My Doe Doe Sweetheart
A Burmese princess,
is she, my “Doe Doe” sweetheart;
my partner of life.
With maiden name PU,
she manifests the DAO;
reflecting it as mirror.
By simply being,
without the need of acting;
with sincere presence.
Giving, not taking,
receiving with gratitude;
putting others first.
Ever so giving,
is her loving selfless nature;
so spontaneous.
A soul from the East,
she shines her light in the West;
spreading happiness.
With her gracefulness,
she brings all Taoist joy;
joy of fulfillment.
Spawned from the delta,
my Irrawaddy maiden
is my bride for life.
Together, us both,
from the East and the West;
conjoined now as one.
A Burmese princess,
is my “Doe Doe” sweetheart;
my partner in life.

About this poem
This haiku poem honors and is a tribute to Florence Hershell Pu, the young Burmese-Karen Fulbright scholar I met at Howard University, in Washington, D.C., when she was eighteen years old, and I an island lad, at twenty four, Cupid’s arrow piercing me, fell ever so much in love with her. I call her tenderly and lovingly, “Doe Doe,” her adorable pet name. Now here we are, more than six decades later, she loyally at my side, and I, at over eighty years, still madly courting her, reciting haiku poetry. more »
