Analysis of Haiku Art Form
Japanese Haiku.
Pivotal to its culture.
This three-line poem.
It highlights nature.
Spring, Summer, Winter or Fall.
Meditatively.
Its simplicity
is so uniquely Zen form;
for one’s reflection.
Haiku poetics
is Art of syllogism.
With linguistic ploy.
Wittgenstein would say.
And Barthes, too, acknowledge, that
Haiku has great form.
Like a cup of tea.
In a Japanese tea house.
Offered by the host.
Warming appetites.
Haiku is creative art.
Brevity distilled.
A three-line haiku.
With premise and conclusion.
Sequenced as montage.
Haiku principles.
Governed aesthetically.
Are fundamental.
Poetry as wit
rendered in form of Haiku
for all four seasons.

About this poem
French literary theorist, philosopher, critic and semiotician Roland Barthes, described poetry, from a semiotic perspective, as containing signifiers for that which is filled with “concentrated emotion” yet inexpressively signified. Likewise, Austrian-British philosopher, logician and mathematician Ludwig Wittgenstein, was impressed by the expressive system of the haiku poetic art form. This haiku poem, entitled “Haiku Art Form,” is extended into six stanzas in order to more fully describe the characteristics of the Japanese haiku art form. more »
