Analysis of BE AFRAID

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Outside in this loathsome night
Be afraid of all that comes your way,
Abominations human and non-human,
Intending you to be their prey.

Unwary of your possible fate
All kinds of predators stalking you,
Shades, and shapes, and dark images
Loathsome shadows on the move.

Unafraid of the pitch-black night
Terror is slowly coming your way,
Hoping soon to track you down
Then to carry your corpse away.

Prehistoric monsters in the dark
Reptiles from the dawn of time,
Hunting, hoping, loping after you
Foul enough to make you lose your mind.

Green Men, Blue Men, Hippogriffs
Hunting you as you slowly move on,
Unaware of the dangers approaching
Unknowing that your time is near gone.

Be afraid of every movement
In the darkened township,
Creatures from out of the past?
Brought here by some sudden time slip?

Leviathan beings are thundering
Toward where you are walking,
Flying reptiles from out of time
Wheeling, squealing, ever squawking.

Killers both small and mammoth
Slowly closing in on your direction,
Hoping soon to reach you walking
To feast on you without hesitation.

THE END
