Analysis of Acid Reflux

every night it’s the same ordeal
it takes her hours of tossing and turning
to finally reach that deep, sweet sleep

then right around midnight
as by some spell or curse
she begins to awake
every hour on the hour

choking on the acid that
has climbed up her throat
she cries and waddles
as fast as she can
to the toilet and spits
out the fiery fluid

her throat burns like the
injustice of the situation
she chugs a glass, then a second
of bathroom tap water
but she cannot kill the burn and
the taste of bile remains as fresh
as her frustration towards God
and this unborn baby

and as foul as her anger for the
(absent) boy who put her here

About this poem

I wrote the first rough draft of this poem years ago, and just recently found it and edited it into this final form. It is about the physical and emotional pains a young woman experiences at night as she carries the weight of a difficult pregnancy by herself.
