Analysis of For My Brown Mother.
Melissa Singh 1982 (Georgetown)
I wish I celebrated my brown mother more.
She truly is the glue, the love, the dedication and the strength we need.
I wish I hugged my brown mother more.
She is the laughter and the joy that fills our hearts.
I wish I cooked with my brown mother more, her use of spices celebrates my heritage and culture with such significance and grace
I wish I told my brown mother more.
She is the shield that encompasses us and protects us with her fierce ways.
I wish I could be like my brown mother more.
She forgives, she encourages, she includes, she shares, she cares for everything and everyone like no other.
I wish I admired my brown mother more.
She’s beautiful beyond comprehension, her smile lights up a room, her presence makes everything better and her soul is authentic beyond words.
I wish I prayed for my brown mother more.
She is irreplaceable and divine.
I love my brown mother. I’m proud to be the Indian daughter of a beautiful and most kind brown goddess. This brown woman is my biggest supporter, the one Who is there when I stumble, when I’m sad, when I’m happy and when I’m scared.
Proud to be a brown girl of a strong brown woman.
To my brown mother.
With love.

About this poem
This poem was written as I reflected on the experiences I’ve had with my beautiful mother. Being a mother myself I have more understanding of the role a mother plays. No matter race or creed all mothers should be celebrated.
