Analysis of Flicker

Rachelle Coetzee 2003 (Pretoria)

I fell in love.
I fell in love with that mischievous smile you love to flaunt.
I fell in love with those eyes that hold earthquakes strong enough to bring mountains to their knees.
I fell in love with the way my name sounds rolling off your tongue.

But I need to learn that I can't make homes out of humans,
and that this spark is not a fire meant to keep me warm,
that even though it felt like your arms were walls meant to protect me from my own internal storms,
you aren't mine.

So even though my mind is littered with you
and you've rooted yourself deep into everything single aspect of my life
I need to accept that the flicker of emotion in your hazel eyes
was merely my mind playing tricks on me,
making me hope

That you could be in love with me too.
