Analysis of Birthday Poem
For this birthday we cannot recite an
old poem but speak a new one for the
long pilgrimage you are taking.
Covid slammed the door on the
way we had learned to love the world.
Your talents spread like laughter,
amputated where they were most glorious.
Your sensitively of forboding
inhabit your nights and you wake
shaking and in peril.
We find ourselves in our corners
tending to wounds we have ignored.
As we watch you journey inwards
bushwacking through the flora your mind,
we celebrate not only your birth that
has brought benefit to so many but
vulnerability and courage to
walk each day in that liminal
space in danger of loosing your footing.
This is where your wings are made
to lift off and breath in that rarified air we long for.
No battle of the birthday is short.
the darker it gets the closer to the extraordinary
One, is the other side of the other.
These are your warrior
years drained of resources but
each day getting closer to yourself
to hearth within beginning to
warm you, though at times you think
there is only ashes but when you
stir them with your grace a fame leaps up.

About this poem
I wrote this poem for a friend's birthday and then I realized that I was writing for everyone's birthday after what we have all been through. Covid insisting we bang into ourselves.
