Analysis of BLACK HORIZON

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Beyond the black horizon
Darkling creatures reside,
Hoping for innocents to come
But safely indoors they hide.

Kerbside beings are hunting
Searching for human or beast,
Hoping soon to run them down
Then to gorge on a bloody feast.

Nightlings scour the roadside
Hoping to find human road kill,
Or living things to rip and rend
Guzzling till they've had their fill.

Beyond the black horizon
Revenants lurching all around,
Lumbering after the living
As they stalk this solemn town.

Shoggoths winging overhead
Throughout the endless night,
Wyvern haunting the land
Til suddenly taking to flight.

In a town named purgatory
Just beyond the black horizon,
People are living in mortal fear
For all goodness is forever gone.

Chittering fills the haunted night
As avian monstrosities fly,
Multi-taloned fiends aflight
As innocents are passing by.

Below walks a courting couple
Strolling together hand-in-hand,
Then feathered fiends swoop down
Leaving but blood-soaked land.

THE END
