Analysis of As the Ocean

Luna Jane Bearer 1995 (Pennsylvania)

You my love are as the ocean,
turbulent and gray.
Always coming closer,
yet further you go away.

At the edge of a precipice
to peer in your soul.
Dove deep into the water
towards an unknown goal.

Sailing ‘round your heaven,
I wandered upon the sky.
Glowing stars had appeared
as I hailed the sun goodbye.

Certain beauty in the darkness,
glory in the night.
I cry out, but not in pleasure,
at our awful plight.

Can you hear the sirens calling,
floating on the gales.
I plug my ears, search within,
and face their frightening wails.

You bring me to the highest peaks,
cast me back on down.
Floating through a black abyss,
a queen who lost her crown.

As the tide is with the moon,
to you I have been drawn.
I bound myself to this ship,
 to sink until I’m gone.

About this poem

This poem is about someone I loved very deeply, who would give and take his love for me. I chose to devote myself to this love, losing part of me in the process. Choosing love over happiness, because love does not always mean we are happy.

I loved, I cried, I laughed, ate the most delicious food, and saw unimaginable beauty. I was inspired by the darker side of my experiences and from that my poetry was born. more…
