Analysis of Sweet Calamity

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

In a little old farmhouse down the road
Lived a little old man with a heavy load
He carried his sorrow and anger and grief
Wouldn’t share with his neighbors and got no relief

He used to have money and family and friends
But now he has no one on whom to depend
Calamity came and she knocked on his door
He couldn’t resist her, so she came back for more

She cleaned out his house; no more family or friends
No possessions or money for him to defend
She left him there naked, alone on the floor
He was writhing in pain when she left for the shore

It looked like a good day to go to the beach
So, she kicked up some waves and started to preach
She stated the things she was going to do
Then she turned and was looking directly at you

She doesn’t play favorites; but this you should learn
You’re waiting in line and you’ll get your turn!
