Analysis of The Climb

Milton Tejada 1967 (Moca)

What are you hiding on the other side?
Why tacitly persist in battering my forehead
When you can only reach my hips?

I stare at you and you overwhelm me
I am frightened  by the calluses and the ancient scars on your back

A deep sigh and a drop of cold sweat
Reminds me of my athletic littleness
One more time I look at you
And I see you beyond you

You are a breath of life
Molded and eternalized
That mother earth exhales
From her mysterious womb

I already know you and I don't fear you
You consume me in every stride
And the climbing silences my soul
And I wound you and kiss you in every step I take
And I climb and I climb and you take me and you leave me
I turned my eyes back at you and smile

About this poem

Inspired by El Camino de Santiago in northern Spain. A pilgrimage pregnant of wonderful nature, introspection, and challenges, such as hill climbing after miles of walk
