Analysis of The Enigma of the Scopolamine Morning in the Orchid Hotel, Umiam
Mawphniang Napoleon 1993 (Ri Bhoi)
In the morning's light, as the sun rises high,
I woke up, next to a stranger, in the Orchid Hotel, in Umiam.
The memories of the night before, a blur, a haze,
I don't recall, how I got here, in this bed, in this place.
From Nongpoh, my village, I came,
My car, broken down, at Lad Umroi, I did remain.
I walked to the Orchid Restaurant, for a peck of gin and a cocktail,
But after that, my memory, did unravel.
I asked a matchstick, from a stranger in the dark,
In the parking lot, I stood, I did embark.
She gave me a cigarette, instead of a light,
And after that, my memory, took flight.
Thirty minutes passed, the stranger woke up,
She looked like a wife, of a politician, all grown up.
She told me, we should meet often, she loved to sleep with me,
But I don't recall, what she said, I couldn't see.
She told me, the cigarette, she gave me last night,
Was mixed with scopolamine, brought from Amsterdam, delight.
I was shocked, I was under her spell, after that cigarette,
Now I wanted to leave, to forget, to forget.
She gave me ten thousand rupees, not to tell anyone,
About the night before, the incident that had begun.
I left the hotel room, I ran, to Lad Umroi,
To fix my car, my friend came, to help me through.
We went to a casino, in Khanapara, I bet all my money,
And got fifteen lakhs, but was asked to leave, for being so funny.
I gave half of my profit, to my friend who took me there,
He asked me, how I did it, share some tricks, if you dare.
All I did was mathematics, and scrodigger cat calculation,
Which worked well, with my luck, with my imagination.
I got down in Nongpoh, I confessed to a priest,
He told me, I committed a sin, of gambling, an dishonest feat.
I must donate to my church, for the gods' lavish residency,
And gave him my tithe money, for my lifetime subscription and cemetery.
After that, they elected me, as an elder of my church,
I am a holy gambler now, a religious perch.
I will bet more money, I will visit my holy cities,
Jerusalem and Vatican City, for my spiritual whimsies.
With literature from around the world, I will draw my verse.
A poem, from an existential crisis , immersed.
And as I wander through the holy lands,
I ponder on the meaning of life, with open hands.
Is it to serve the gods, to live a righteous life?
Or is it to find oneself, to cut through all the strife?
